Now on eBay, advertised as a bass clarinet: An old Kohlert open-hole alto clarinet with an alto sax neck. Hmmmm....

We won't tell on you, either, Diz![:)](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie1.gif)
...although, it looks to me like brand name reads V. Kohlart's. Note, too, that much of the maker's mark is (conveniently?) covered. It's misleading if we're supposed to infer it's a V. Kohlert (and sons?). That's probably not uncommon not so many years ago. Only way I know of to really know if it's any good would be to find a neck that'll fit and play it.
The (sax) neck might be worth the price of admission, even without the key, if someone's looking for an adjustable(?) one like that - if it still works. They're not all that common any more.
No reflection on the sellers, those who don't claim to be experts. I believe many eBayers, like this one, have very skimpy knowledge of much of what they're auctioning. But then, like pawn shops and thrift stores, that's free enterprise![:)](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie1.gif)

I just noticed -- the neck has cork on the outside of both ends, so you'll have to use a sax-style mouthpiece that goes over the neck rather than inside a socket. Not many of those around, I'd say, unless you want to use (and the neck happens to fit), say, an alto sax mouthpiece.

What a bizzare setup. Maybe it's really a Chu-lert 6M(odified) for "octavizing" flute parts. The pitch might be as low as C or maybe B.

HEY!!! Maybe this is the answer for those students who cannot decide between a sax and a clarinet. ....and they probably won't have a need for the register key. Might be a good thing, too, that saxophone or clarinet reeds of any type could be used.

I've bought from this guy before, and I believe he's really just a merchandiser who gets things from estate sales and resells 'em on eBay. He did answer questions regarding the item I bought, but he had no idea what it was, then or now. (For that matter, neither do I... it was made in India and is sort of a cross between an Autoharp and a Clavichord... but cute.)
I enlarged and played with the image of the alto clarinet marque with the lyre bracket screwed over it. Seems to me it *may* read "V. Kohlert's Sons."

I have a covered hole tenor clarinet by Kohlert & co.Winnenden( West Germany). It is a vulcanite barrel with nickel plated bell(same as the eBay item)but the metal top section just slopes rather than being a sax type crook. The Carse collection has a tenor clarinet by J. Higham of Manchester, open hole with a tenor sax type crook.Kohlert is not listed in the Langwill. The eBay item is(in my opinion) a genuine tenor clarinet. The mouthpiece has a tenon the same as the old metal clarinets.I may list mine on eBay soon.
