See http://www.sneezy.org/clarinet/Music/Blumberg.html#rates for a general idea of rates in the USA.

Rates are likely to be higher now than they were when Blumberg did his survey in 1998. My teacher charges $55 per hour, up from $45 last year which was the high end of Blumberg's survey in 1998.

p.s.: lessons from my teacher are worth every penny of the $55!

I couldn't afford private lessons at $55/hr even if they were worth every penny. In my area, there are a number of colleges and schools with music programs. I've found both professors and graduate students who will teach for $30-45/hr. At one of the local universities there is a program for "towns-people" (!!) where you can take private lessons on campus, if the instructor isn't booked with music student lessons; also at reduced cost.
It's probably worth checking around.... my bet is that the prices can be pretty different in different parts of the country.

I'm in the boonies of California. $12.50 a half hour. Clarinet or alto sax. This is not a symphonic performance quality lesson, but a darned fine Jazz Band lesson. Certainly enough for a 52 yr old newbie. He played with Dorsey and the NATO Band for 20 years.

Because I pay it in tuition rate (and it is required of me to do it through my college), I pay about 30.60$ per half hour (actually a little more because that is assuming that there are no days off during the entire semester where I would miss a lesson which isn't actual. For the $469 I am entitled to 14 lessons, no more. :-P bleh.... never thought how expensive it really is!

In south Jersey we pay $30/ hr to a retired HS teacher with 35+ years exp who is now in his second career teaching at our local state college. I don't think he reads this board, I wouldn't want him to see the $55 rate!

IF you get a good professor, it may be around 40 to 80 dollars per hour.

But there is probably a good grad student or recent gradute or beginning pro for like 30 dollars an hour that's my experience
