I never really remember any formal all-state program in Michigan, like with auditions or things like that, but then again my high school music program wasn't exactly on top of things outside of the county. So I guess my question is...is there a formal all -state program? The closest thing I know of is done through performances at solos and ensemble...basically the top performers at the state level competitions are selected to play in a band and orchestra in the spring.

I live in Michigan and don't know of an official all state program. I am familiar of the solo and ensemble program that you speak of, however. There are honors bands and orchestras offered through colleges. UofM has an honors orchestra and band that meets for sunday practices. Eastern Michigan has a program that resembles an all state program and is done over a weekend. Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra is the most prestigious for a Michigan wind player in high school as usually one or two chairs per instrument is avalible.

I am a sophmore from dallas,Texas. In Texas we have a very structured all-state program. You must first try out a regional level which is about 10 schools to make the all-region band. For clarinets the top 9 players advance to pre-area which there are 9 other players from 10 or so other schools. The top 9 that come out of there are eligible for area competition. There are about 7 areas in Texas. At area tryouts there are the to 30 or so players for each area which is a pretty large span of land. The top 9 players in each area try out which is on the same day all throughout Texas are All- state players. I made it my freshman year as 4th when only one other freshman in the state made it. I also made it this year as 1st. Usually the majority of players that make it are juniors and seniors. All of the music to determine all region and all state is a slow medium and a fast etude from the melodious and progressive studies book. If you make all-state they hand you a packet of music to practice on to be placed state wide at Texas Music Educators Associaton which is a big convention in san antonio including choir, orchestra, and band. After yu try out there they place you into either 1 of 2 orchestras or 1 of 2 bands that will preform a concert at the ending of the week. So you get to see how you rank with the rest of the state. The convention is coming up in february. The same process happens with chior and orchestra but their try outs go a little diffrent. We also have texas state solo and ensemble which is in austin where you have to earn your spot there by playing you solo memorized well at regional levels. then you are elligible to go to state solo and ensembe where you can choose to do a solo and or an ensemble. We also have state wide marching band and concert band competion which my band as both one
