Hi,
I am trying to search the web for music for the clarinet for my dad who is not on line ( although I am hoping that this will spark his interest).
He played clarinett in college and has been at it ever since. He isn't good but he loves it and as my mom passed away about 2 months ago he has been very quiet so I am trying to find a site on the web where he could go and download music from Benny Goodman and that era. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would sure appreciate it. Thanks. Neal Jones

I think you would be well servered to go and buy him a couple of music books. benny goodman is available (if he is not too good, he won't be able to play benny's stuff)
i would suggest "the big book of jazz" it has 75 classics and the price is around $20.00.
have fun

This music is still under copyright so you'll need to find places to purchase it. It's not clear whether you are after sheet music or recordings. For sheet music, try the sponsor at the top of the bulletin board. For recordings, try amazon.com. Also do a search using one of the search engines for "Goodman recordings" or "Goodman sheet music".

If you find Goodman's music a bit tough, I'd suggest you look for some Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Barney Bigard [there are more clists] "solos" . Some of the Glenn Miller's clarinet-leads [of his sax sections] would likely be quite playable. Will try to think of more. The booklet, Clarinet Sessions, available via music stores has some goodies for solo playing. Luck, Don

You may be intersted in a fake book, too. The music is fairly simple - in my book, at least. Plus, there is a lot of it. I have the "Ultimate Jazz Fake Book." I'm pretty sure there are others out there. They really have a lot of music, so maybe it's worth a look.
Good luck

While you're at it, check around and find a community band he can join. The one we play with plays all the "good ol' tunes" and its more like a family there even though the ages range from teens to great grand parents. Most community bands are always short on clarinets.

Clarinet Sessions is a book with duets, trios and quartets. Among the quartets are some nice jazzy versions of Danny Boy, Swing Low, and Turkey in the Straw. There are also some neat duets that you play forwards/backwards, right side up/upside down, etc. Terrific book, but not particularly easy.

Dear Neil,
First, condolences on your loss. Moms are sure hard to part with.
In regard to your music question, I look at Amazon first, write down the cds I'd like, and then go to Half.com. Much cheaper, but not everything.
Another option is to search internet-carried radio stations, and see when their Big Band hour/s are broadcast. That's the cheap way. Your Dad might want to send in requests.
When my Dad died, my Mom didn't want to hear some of the memory lane music for a while-far longer than 2 months. She had those horrrible "hooked on" series of music written by Bach, Mozart, Brahms.
Are you sure he wouldn't like clarinet music in another genre? Playing to the grand/kids is pretty simple. My nephew loves to get a note out of my clarinet too. That squeal means everything.
Best during this difficult time,
Anne
