 Stravinsky Firebird!!
Author: robert

Hi all, I am writing to ask help with the variation (2nd movt) in Stravinsky's Firebird. I was wondering how to approach this section of the piece. It seems extremely difficult to get this feeling like 2 (besides actually playing it!) and I was hoping that some of you could help shed some light as far as things to do/practice/know that will make this part of the piece successful. Please help!

The slower you practice it, the faster you will learn it. 6 metronome clicks to the bar. Start around 60

Good Luck.

David just gave you the best advice.
Practice extremely slow, ask your teacher for special fingerings. There are a few tricks that one can use which won't be heard at the speed it goes.
ALWAYS USE THE METRONOME.

Yes, slowly, as slow as you need to play evenly, then gradually add speed. Use the metronome, absolutely!

Also, try to get a copy of the corrected edition. Both the excerpt book and the older Kalmus editions are full of errors (there is even a flute part inserted by accident!)

If you listen to the orchestra play it, the strings play eighth notes anyway, so I just hear six beats to the measure, at all the speeds I play and practice it at. Using fake fingerings also really helps.
