I heard "Clarinet Sonata in Eb" played over the radio Sat. morn. I think the composer is Saint-Saens ............is this correct?
The clarinetist was Alexandre Tharaud. Does anyone know who best performs this piece (besides you guys)? Maybe something was lost in the radio transmission but I didn't feel that the performance was all that good. Then again, it just may be this particular composition..........I do think that it could have been better, though.

The Saint-Saens Sonata, written just before Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) died is an important early 20th century French work. (Come to think of it - Mozart, Brahms, Poulenc, Gordon Jacob all died after writing clarinet masterpieces)
My 2 favorite recordings:
Harold Wright - Boston Records #BR 1023 CD
Paul Meyer - "French Clarinet Art" - Denon #81757 9282 2 ...GBK

GBK, your reminder has positively encouraged me to stop all work on my Sonata for Clarinet and Harpsichord. It is unfortunate that the music world will little note nor long remember this service you have done.

I think the best recording of the Saint-Saens Sonata is the first one, by Ulysse Delecluse, the head of the clarinet faculty at the Paris Conservatory. It was issued in the 1950s on a 10" Selmer/London LP. His tone was in the thin, bright French style that takes some getting used to (well, a LOT of getting used to), but his technique was astounding, and his musical style was perfect.
I think Mark bought a copy on eBay a while back. Mark -- what do you think?
The Stoltzman recording is excellent, though very much in "his" style of playing. The Meyer recording is much "straighter" and also very good.
Best regards.

Ralph is correct (I had forgotten about Nielsen). Three years after writing the Concerto he was gone.
Perhaps the surgeon general should put composer warning labels on all clarinet cases...GBK

Pete, Pete?!?!
You DID write that sonata, didn't you? - tsk tsk tsk the warning signs. Um, Pete - you ARE alive aren't you?? Your acid tongue and charming elloquence is sorely missed.

Of course, it'd be pretty hard to die before you wrote your clarinet concerto if indeed you did write a clarinet concerto ...
Isn't this something like finding something you lost in the last placed that you looked? :^)
