 Mozart 5tet

While we're on the subject, does anyone know if this work is ever played on the Basset-clarinet? Where would the low notes be more acceptable? It's not so obvious to find as in the concerto. Is it historically more correct?

Alan Hacker made a recording of it on basset. I have it on vinyl; don't know if it's available on CD.

Jez -

There are fewer places in the Mozart Quintet that require the basset notes than in the Concerto, but there are some:

Near the beginning of the development in the first movement, the strings have churning arpeggios that develop the arpeggios of the initial clarinet entrance, while the clarinet plays simple arpeggios, some of which "turn back" because the low notes are missing. Also, the last note of the movement is sometimes played down the octave.

I've heard the last three notes of the slow movement played down, but I don't like it.

In the third movement, near the end of the second trio, the descending triplets followed by the ascending arpeggio should almost certainly be played as all ascending eighth notes.

In the fourth movement, first variation, it's a tossup whether to jump down two octaves instead of one. Most performers on a basset clarinet choose the low notes. In the second variation, most basset players jump down on the last note of each phrase. In the third variation, every basset player continues the arpeggio down at the ends of the phrases. In the fourth variation, every basset player starts on the low C and makes various other use of the low notes. At the very end, most basset players play the final two notes down.

Best regards.
