After reading the thread about putting a string down your clarinet to attempt to turn it into an A clarinet, I wandered what would happen if you removed the bell - Would it make a C clarinet? No, just an out of tune Bb clarinet! The only notes that seemed significantly changed were the low E and the third line B. Both were at least a quarter step sharp.

The bell is active mostly for the long notes - it makes the "tube" long enough to sound the low notes.

I think you pointed out in another post a while back the the bell is the lowest *tone hole*.
By taking the bell off, Sneakers, you removed a major tone hole :] :]
Fortunately, that's one of the easiest 'fixes' there is
