I have recently acquired an old Leblanc contrabass. It has a double register key, and I'm not quite sure where on the staff I'm suppossed to switch. Thanks to any and all who can help me with this.

Probably going from D# to E in the clarion register (that's where the automatic double register systems on bass clarinets make the switch).

Definitely between D# and E. That's where the automatic key switches and where every low clarinet I've seen switches.
Best regards.

Definitely between D# and E. That's where the automatic key switches and where every low clarinet I've seen switches. On the other hand, there's no harm in experimenting. E is a bad note on most contras, because it's at the very bottom of the range controlled by the upper register key. There's enough variation from instrument to instrument that yours could very well play the E better using the lower key.
Best regards.

Hmmm........on all the LeBlanc contra's I've worked on the double register mechanism is an "automatic" (for lack of better term) system. I've not seen one separated.
