 The most beautiful clarinet writting

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of the chamber music experience.

One of the most delightful and rewarding pieces (IMHO) including the clarinet and other instruments/voices would have to be Schubert's "der Hirt auf dem Felsen" (The Shepherd on the Cliffs) sometimes called Shepherd on the Rock. The clarinet part is a true delight and, in combination with the soprano voice and wonderful piano accompaniementmakes for a truly fantastic experience.

Technically, the work is not particularly demanding, but when it comes to interpretation ...

Sadly, written in 1828, the year of Schubert's death...GBK

Hmm, fits in with the trend. Write for clarinet, and you are just about done.

LOL - yes, very perceptive of you! Mozart and Schubert would possibly think the clarinet had a curse?

Diz,
Not particularly demanding? You must be joking. My teacher has promised me a bottle of champagne when I can play it to his satisfaction, and I reckon I'm still about 10 years off. Sometimes the most apparently simple pieces (the adagio from the Mozart concerto, for example) are the hardest to play, because every fault comes through.

Do you prefer to play this piece on an
A - clarinet or on a Bb - clarinet ?

wrong question perhaps. I own two recordings of shepherd on the rocks.

1) Rita Streich, Heinrich Geuser (cl), Michael Raucheisen (piano)
2) Elly Ameling, Hans Deinzer (cl), Jörg Demus (piano)

Streich/Geuser/Raucheisen are performing it a note higher than
Ameling/Deinzer/Demus. So I guess that Geuser payed a Bb clarinet
and Deinzer played a A clarinet. I might be wrong though.

Hans Deinzer's recording is from the early days of original instruments when everything was done in baroque pitch A=415. That's why it sounds one half step lower. He's actually playing a Bb clarinet in A=415. The piano is also tuned in 415. In the beginning of the 80th the international standard for classical instruments became A=430 and this pitch is still remaining.

Um - if you'd read my posting you might have notice my comment: but when it comes to interpretation. Technically challenging I would think that Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe clarinet written is very difficult - Schubert, the difficulty comes with the interpretation.
