Hmmm... that's a toughie. What do your band directors play?
If it's trombone and/or flute, you're dommed before you start.

Why not start one by yourself, get some music and start rehersing. Ask to be put in one of your concerts. I know that my band director in high school was pretty busy. Your's might not have the time, but that shouldn't stop you from getting something together.

I agree -- start it yourself. One band I play in is a town band. We rehearsed at someone's house. Played our rehearsed piece at a band break. Low and behold -- we played it a job we had with our director conducting. Great bonding anad makes for a better section.

You're not necessarily doomed if your band director is a brass player --- we had a fine clarinet choir in high school under our trumpet-playing band director. I agree that starting one yourself, rehearsing a bit, then 'auditioning' for your director is a good approach (presenting him/her with a 'fait accompli', more or less).
