 Bestler and Maxtone clarinets
Author: becky

My student is looking to buy a plastic clarinet. He already has a wooden one handed down to him from an uncle, but needs something for outdoors. Does anyone know anything about these clarinets? I think he found them on Ebay. The Maxtone says French engineer?!?!?!?!? I mean its a plastic clarinet, does it really matter?

I had a Yamaha plastic clarinet when I first started playing ... it wasn't half bad.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again...

The anagram of: "clarinet by bestler" is: "lyric treble? absent!!"

Anagrams often reveal hidden messages...GBK

Hi, Becky -
Bestler, Maxtone, Lark, Jinyin(formerly Rhythm), Monique, Jupiter, Parrot... in plain words, anything out of China (or India),
Leave 'em on eBay and don't look back :|
Someone will pop up here shortly to tell you who the 'big four' are.
That'll save you a lot of heart(and pocketbook)ache.

LOL - I can at least vouch for the first three ... as to the fourth, that will remain to be proven.

FYI.. Buffet-Crampon makes a student model "Evette", and Selmer has "Bundy". By the way, "French Engineer" is not necessarily "Made in France". Check with a clarinet teacher. If you don't have one to consult, contact your school district's music teacher to refer you to one. Watch buying on ebay. I purchased an "Evette" made by Buffet for my son. I was lucky, and the instrument only needed minor repair, but overall unless you see that the one posting is reputable on ebay, don't do it!!!

Bob you're obviously a fully-paid-up-card-carrying-member and it went without saying!

For outdoor playing, you can't beat an old Bundy or Vito. they can be picked up fairly cheap and with the right mouthpiece, sound pretty decent.

The band instrument repairman, and a former band director, swears by the old plastic Bundy's, and many of my students have them. They will perform even when they do need some repair, because they are not as "touchy" as some of the other student models. My son has a plastic "Evette", and he loves it. Selmer makes student models, as well.

From the postings I've read, there seems to be "folk wisdom" that the offshore clarinets are poor quality. As a guitar, and not a clarinet person, I remember this happenning with knockoff guitars, and in truth they were all over the map. Certainly classic instruments in equal condition are preferred, but I doubt that a worn-to-hell Bundy from e-bay is going to give as much service as, or less trouble than the best of the new Chinese instruments. Everyone here passes on "the word", but none or damn few of the sages here are speaking from experience, and most seem to be parrotting stock wisdom, or are promoting their instrument repair sideline. California wines and Japanese cars used to get the same rap, and look now... ...I'd like to hear someone say which of these Chinese instruments are better and which are worse, first hand. We can't all afford French wine, German cars, and until I go pro I don't need to spring for a Martin, my Yamaha is just fine. How many of you have an IBM computer now, anyway? I suppose now I'll get a stream of romantics saying how much of a plebe I am for comparing computers with clarinets, but I know a crappy computer when I touch it. Any real comparative knowledge out there?
