 A to C# Trill Fingering?
Author: Kathy Beatty

It must be trilling season, this is the third question about a trill today! Are there any good fingerings to allow one to trill from clarion A to altissimo C#? None of the trill charts I've seen address trills between notes more than 1 step apart. Does anyone know of a chart that does?

Kathy -

A trill of more than a step is called a tremolo.

Have you tried lifting your middle finger and thumb, as you would going from low D to F#? It's not perfect, but may be the best possible. I don't have my instrument with me right now, but a combination of trill keys might work, too -- perhaps the bottom 3, which you can press with the side of your finger on the lower 2 and your knuckle on the third one.

Let us know what works.

Best regards.

Paul -

It's a trill using two fingers instead of one. Play A, keep your left index finger down and raise and lower your middle finger and thumb simultaneously.

Play the A the traditional way, play the D with just l-h first finger in place (overblowing the bottom line F#) Alternate (tremelo) between the two--try sixteenth note speed (four per beat) Ugly, but it works!!! (kind of like the clarinet as an instrument) Good Tremeloing (and Clarineting)

Well, last night the band director decided to drop the piece (a band arrangement of"Jupiter", from Holst's "The Planets"), due to lack of enough depth in the band. We are a small band with only about 20 members and just 3 clarinet players. If you're familiar with the arrangement, it really needs a large clarinet section to do it justice.

However, I tried Ken's fingering solution and while it was better than anything else I found, I was having a very hard time coordinating my fingers. I plan to continue to practice this tremolo, however, since it is very challenging. I'd like to be able to get it to a place where it sounds decent.

I've used the fingering Ken recommends on "Jupiter" and that's my preference, also.
