Are Selmer Prologues better for jazz than R13s?

I think the Prologue has a deeper tone than the Buffet R-13 and would think it would be a good instrument for jazz. I've play-tested a couple of them and really liked the way they sounded. Their keys have a nice "rounded" feel to them. You can get one for less than the R-13, so they're generally a good buy. However, in the long run, should you want to sell it in the future--the R-13 has the best resale value. The Prologue is an entry-level professional model. The bore size is .570 and an R-13 is .5765--there's just a bit of difference. The bigger tone is better for jazz. You might add a jazz mouthpiece, or an open mouthpiece to add to the jazz or big band tone of the Prologue.

If you look at a current Selmer brochure, the Prologue and the 10SII list the same bore dimensions. According to Selmer, the Prologue and 10SII are acoustical twins as far the bore is concerned. What differentiates the two models is the amount of handwork that goes into the 10SII. While both models have undercut tone holes, apparently more time and effort is spent fine tuning the undercutting of the 10SII tone holes.

For info, both the Prologue and the 10SII will be discontinued by Selmer Paris and replaced by the Odyssée. This is the case in France already, I don't know what are Selmer's plan for the US. Has anyone heard of the Odyssée in the US yet?

No, but the Paris Omega is the Prologue's identical twin. You can't buy it through discount stores or catalogues, but Brook Mays Music carries it. I think it's still in the line up. I've sold several of them and people really like them. I've used one for my personal use with big band stuff and liked it. It has a nice big tone.

My understanding is that the Prologue, 10SII, and 10G are no longer in production and the Odyssee and the Artys will be introduced in the U. S. sometime this year. It's interesting that the French website Selmer.fr still does not mention the Odyssee and the Artys. I'm sure they are trying to build enough of the new instruments to stock the dealer's shelves before any official announcements are made.

I made the comment about the Selmer Paris website not being updated many times to the retailer I bought my Odyssée from. If you look at other pages on their website, specifically "news", the latest one is from Jan 2000! The Odyssée is already on the shelves (the Artys is due in the coming weeks) at retailers and brochures have been printed, but not a word on their site. I suspect their website not mentionning the Odyssée and the Artys is more of a webmaster/marketing problem than a real communication policy (unfortunately).

In my experience the communication effort of Selmer Paris is almost nill - through ANY media.
Are you saying that Selmer Paris are not responsible for their own marketing?

Well Gordon, I am not saying such a thing, I know nothing about Selmer's internal organisation, I am then not drawing any final conclusion. I am just telling a fact and responding to Ralph's suggestion about the lack of info on their website with my own feeling. Having a marketing background myself, I can only say that it is a pity to have a website not being updated particularly with new product announcements. And judging from the lack of info from other categories on their website, I am just saying that the lack of info about the Odyssée/Artys doesn't seem to be part of a deliberate marketing policy.
