Hmm, this bugs me (only because I can't find out why). On the "normal" clarinet (i.e. B flat or A, etc). The tone hole producing "middle C" (written) has no ring mechanism over it - it seems to be the same whether it's a LeBlanc, Selmer or whatever - is there a reason for this?

The rings serve to link a hole to other key mechanisms that must be activated in order to produce a particular tone. With that particular tone, no other mechanisms are needed so there is no need for a ring.

On the full Boehm models, that particualar hole has a ring that gives you another and more convienient way to play Bb/Eb with simply l-h TR X O X--O O O (for upper Bb and with no R for lower Eb). You would also have a fifth r-h little finger key for low Eb, useful for transposing A clarinet on your Bb, or just driving your band director nuts when he says, "play your lowest note." Good Clarineting!!!!!!!
Still think that "Diz" sounds "trumpety"

My band director has an exercise where we start on concert Bb, go to the concert E below it (fermata-d notes) and come back up. Occasionally he'll say keep going as low as you can, then stop and whoever goes the longest wins. You can start at any concert Bb you want.
I win the "low-woodwinds" division quite often because I pop out an altissimo G on my contra-alto with considerable effort and beat the bassoon by the scruff of my neck.
Know why? Low Eb. Of course, we all know clarinets rule anyways! But Semi-Full Boehm systems help.
I find that the ring would just get in the way for me. On the other hand, it almost reminds me of what oboes have to do, fork Fs and all.
Any oboists out there, would that option make you feel "at home", so to speak?
