Hello - can anyone "in the know" give me an insight into this species of Selmer clarinet? (the Series 9 * - I think that's what it's called)

When I was in college, in the early sixties, I bought a 9* (went to Elkhart, IN and picked it out) because it was suposed to be Selmer's "answer" to the popular Buffet R-13. Technically, I believe that the 9* had a reverse taper bore in the upper joint--I might be all wrong about that, but I do remember that they intended it to compete with the Buffets of the time. Two years later, I bought an R-13, but kept my Selmer for use as a "backup." Since then, all these years, it has been collecting dust until I recently dragged it out to gave it a "one more time" try. To my amazment, it still played, and didn't sound too bad. So, I took it to my favorite local repairperson, Mary, and told her to give it the works--corks, pads, buff the keys--make it look like new. I'll let you know how it turns out when I get it back. Sorry I could not be of more technical help--Good Clarineting!!!!!!!

With a name like Diz, ever consider the trumpet??? :>)

Um, no -- I'm afraid my disposition is far too humane and cheerful to ever consider trumpet.

Diz - William's comments are accurate. I also play a 9* and can add a bit more information.

1. The nominal bore diameter of the 9* (measured at the lower end of the left hand joint) is .577" as compared to the Series 9, which has a nominal bore diameter of .585". The 9* was Selmer's first attempt at a smaller bore clarinet. Compared to the r-13, there was very little undercutting in the tone holes. According to information from I received from Selmer, the undercutting was limited to the "A" and "G#" throat tone holes. The 9* does not have a polycylindrical bore.

2. The intonation of this series of instruments is supposed to be quite good, especially for an instrument of this vintage.

3. The 9* was also available with the Mazzeo mechanism and in the key of A.
