Well that is subjective Chris. A B40 uses a much more softer reed to give that orgasmic sound to it.

Or how about B52 - useful for that bad pack of reeds.

Duke Ellington, again, has the correct answer--"If it sounds good, it is good." Although most postings extoll the virtues of the B45 (I use one with a custom facing on my bass clarinet), if the B40 works for you, use it. There is no consencious among clarinetists about which brand of mpc is the best, just as there is no "perfect sound." It is all a matter of personal taste, concept of what you like and how well that particular mouuthpiece works for you. Never heard of the B52, but it must be real good for those stratospheric high notes and machine gun like fast staccato we clarinetist all "shoot " for. Like the old tune says, "Straigthen Up and Fly Right" with whichever mpc that lets your talent "soar." Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!!!!

Very good, Emms, and William on the follow-up! Didn't they also make a B2 (Stealth) mouthpiece? As I recall, it never caught on, because once you put it down somewhere you could never find it again, even with radar.

Chris, the answer you'll get from a number of people is, "It depends." In other words, whichever works best for you on your setup. The Vandoren web site has some comparative information on their mouthpieces. Last time I looked, International Musical Suppliers' catalog--available in hard copy or on the web--also had comparative information on the Vandoren moutpieces. Still, it's going to come down to how a particular mouthpiece feels to you and sounds to you and others that should be the deciding factor.

I think the B2 "Stealth" mouthpiece is the one you couldn't hear at all.

I generally prefer the 5RV Lyre, or some of the M series mouthpieces, so to me the real question is: to B or not to B. (Sorry for that one, it is getting late. Just for that an extra 10 minutes of long tones for me tomorrow)
