Can anyone suggest stores in/near Washington, DC, Baltimore, and/or Philadelphia that stock a broad range of B-flat clarinet mouthpieces? (I already checked the retail section on this website and found it not to be much help.) I may want to buy a new mouthpiece (perhaps to replace my 1950s hard-rubber "McCreery"), but would want to try out and compare a number of them, rather than buy by mail/website/ebay (even though we live about 2 hrs. from all the above cities and nothing else of any size, except maybe Wilmington, DE, and Annapolis, MD, is closer). Anybody in particular at any suggested stores to ask for who's especially knowledgeable about mouthpieces?

Millville, NJ.. Regional Music. The head tech is a clarinet player and should know his way around. Not a huge place, but worth a look if it's not a long drive.

I suggest you try Chuck Levin's Washington Music Center in Wheaton MD. It is the largest supplier of band instruments in the Maryland/WashingtonDC/Virginia area and they carry a full line of accessories. Their telephone number is 301 946-8808. I don't know who you should ask for.

Check Vince Marinelli in Wilmington Delaware, If you don't mind an extra hour of driving. He is very well stocked and will let you try as many as you wish for as long as you like!

I guess I should have been more specific in my query. I live on the upper Eastern Shore of Maryland in Chestertown--a wonderful historic small town but many miles in various directions from cities and what they have to offer. But that's the trade-off for the benefits of living here. All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

FYI - Washington Music Center = Chuck Levin's.. theyre info and website are in the retail section here. Ive not bought mpc's from them, but they do have tons of clarinets. You can email them with a request to see about your ability to try out bunches of mpcs. and make an appt to try them out. They have an upstairs area where you can try instruments out apart from the main showroom. Brasswind/Woodwind and Muncy have good mail trial policies. Ive bought several Clark Fobes mpc's from them and barrels too. Remember... just because one mpc doesnt work well, doesnt mean another of the same kind won't. I've always been suprised how mpc's vary within a particular brand/model. Also, good advice from fellow sneezies... try harder to softer reeds on it too before you reject. Bringing some music like a baermann study or rose study helps you try out the whole range/articulation on a mpc too. Blake

Chuck Levins is very good and cheap. My buffet E-11 cost $560. They have a hugh selection of stuff. Go to www.chucklevins.com and you can get price quotes. They take about 2 days to answer by email.

I know that you would prefer to go to a store directly; however, you would probably have a chance to "trial" several selected mouthpieces for a period of time if you can contact Muncy Winds at 1.800.333.6415 or Woodwind/Brasswind at 1.800.348.5003. Greg Smith let me try quite a few mouthpieces and barrels before purchasing one of his mouthpieces. Remember that different mouthpieces require different strength reeds and different cuts (long facings, German or French cuts, etc.). Be sure to have several different types of reeds and reed strengths. A great mouthpiece won't respond well with the wrong reed strength or reed width. Good Luck!
