Help me please all who can. . . i recently was given a clarinet made by artley. it has no markings on it other than 17 s. i want to know if all clarinets sound the same or you have to get a specialised jazz clarinet to play jazz music so it sounds right. i know nothing about them see, and would like to know if i need to change my insrument?

I have an Artley 18s Prelude. I take a lot of criticism because it isn't a "big four" but it's what my parents could afford when I started. I was lucky I even had that. All clarinets are different, even within the same brand and model. If the Artley plays well for you (as mine does for me) then don't worry about it right away. I play tested a Slemer Omega a few years ago and still prefered my Artley, it's all a matter of the player and the clarinet relationship - an individual thing.
There are "jazz" clarinets, but I think the only really difference is a bigger bore (someone want to clarify further? I'm not really sure on specifics). I find it harder to find Jazz clarinet parts. My school ensemble doesn't have anything written for clarinet. If i play, I have to double tenor sax music, but I know that a lot of pieces were written for clar. I think it may be dependent on the type of group you're playing with.
I wouldn't change clarinets unless you A. had the extra money to throw around or B. it was absolutly necessary to have a big bore "jazz clarinet"
I hear a lot of talk about Selmer BTs and CTs (from the big band days) and the Pete Fountains, I think. I'm sure you'll get a million posts coming up about the different brands, especially if I'm wrong. =)

Any decent quality well regulated clarinet can be a "jazz clarinet". The mouthpiece makes a bigger difference than manufacturer or bore dimensions. Pete Fountain plays a large bore horn. Eddie Daniels plays a small bore horn. They both play "jazz clarinet".

The best jazz I ever played up to this point was on an r-13 and B45 profile 88 mp. I heard a recording of myself on this settup and people remarked how much I sounded like Benny Goodman.
The day before I used that same settup (even same reed) on my audition to the Detroit Civic Symphony Orchestra in which one high school spot was open. I made it.
Final Point is that you don't need to sink big bucks in specialized equipment. I think that if you owned a different clarinet for Classical, Jazz, Klezmer, ect.... your never going to get used to one. I think the more you play one instrument you get more aquanted on it and excell the most on it, on any type of music.

Having played a fair bit of jazz, Dixie and big band, but not the "today's" somewhat amplified concert jazz, to me it "used-to-be" a question of sufficient volume to be heard above the brass/saxes on a solo without going up in the altissimo. The old G Miller recordings will show this with the cl lead above the 4-5 saxes, where the big bore Selmers [ with wide tip -long lay mps] were used. "Jazz" music now [seems] different with fewer cl parts-choruses , but more syncopated , but I believe the basic volume problem is still there. Don

My two cents worth, Stephanie, is to back up Robert's statement... a jazz clarinet is the one the jazz clarinet player is playing.
Artleys aren't bad instruments - as good as some, better than most.

cheers for replying everyone. One more thing then whiles i got the bee in my bonnet. . . Whats the best book to teach myself with, bearing in mind i really cant play a thing at this point. maybe something with a lot of pictures for my ill- developed little brain?

Steph: Do a search on Google. Someone has a very good self instruction website for beginners but I can't recall the name. It has pictures of green clarinets in it and the info and suggestions are quite basic and helpful.
