 fingering for Ab
Author: Gretchen

I was practicing a page of excersizes for Ab major in the Galper Scale book. If anyone's played out of it, it has fingering markings above the notes to show you what fingerings you're supposed to practice using. Well, going from an Eb (4th space on the staff) to an Ab (first ledger line) with out an alternate Eb key, you'd have to use your right pinky for the Eb, and then your left for the Ab. Well, the marking in this book showed an x on top of the note Ab, and had a very hard jump from the Ab to I think a B natural or a Db (i can't really remember). I just know that the x was to show me not to use the real Ab fingering. Does anyone know of another fingering and what this means? I'd appreciate the help! Thanks.

Gretch

I don't see why any of those fingering would b a problem. From Eb to Ab, you are alternating fingers. Ab to B should be fine because B is just TR 1 (thumb register and first finger) An Ab to Db shouldn't be hard. I don't know why they would say to use an alternate fingering.

Gretchen...The alternate fingering for Ab5 is:

TR x x o / x x o

If the passage in question is rapid, and the skip after the Eb5 and Ab5 is a Db6, I probably would consider using the alternate Ab fingering.

That way, you can keep part of the right hand down...GBK

i'm sorry sarah, i wasn't clear about which register the B and the Db were...the B is 3rd line (and the Db would be on 3rd space) and it says to use your left pinky to play the B or if it's a Db (also use L)...so i can't use the right pinky. That would be easy...i wouldn't be asking if i could just do that.

Thanks GBK!! :)

Gretchen: I'm afraid you've lost me (Db third space?). B-Db or vice-versa is done with two pinkies, R-L or L-R makes no difference. Chuck
