Can someone please recommend a good recording of the third movement? My daughter has chosen this for her solo. Thank you for any help or suggestions.

My CD is by Richard Stoltzman and the English Chamber Orchestra, Alexander Schneider conducting, on BMG Music - RCA.
I enjoy listening to it quite often.

You should also try Robert Marcellus's recording with the Cleveland Orchestra and George Szell. It is on the Sony Essential Classics label. This recording is perhaps one of the most listened to and emulated interpretations and Marcellus's sound is a wonderful model for younger players especially.

I've heard many renditions of the Mozart, and the Szell/Marcellus is the best performance in my opinion. There is a feeling of "perfect" during listening of this one. Other good recordings by these clarinetists: Anthony Gigliotti, Richard Stoltzman, Gervase DePeyer.

Another vote for the Marcellus recording. There is a real elegance to this performance unmatched by any other that I have heard. The first time I heard this I was in awe at the beauty of it. I felt as if it was the first time I was hearing the work. It still captivates me after all these years.

I highly recommend the EMI recording of the Mozart Concerto with Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic and Karl Leister as the soloist ( This one is much superior to the new EMI BP recording with Sabine Meyer---I hated it). It is the CD with the picture of Herbert von Karajon on it---he's quite old, but he brings such life to the music. I have listened to the Szell/Marcellus version and I definitely like this one a lot better. Leister is a clarinestist with a TOTAL control of the music and orchestra---it's hard to describe this, but he plays with such precision and control that it is very, very enjoyable to hear it after many listening (It might be years and years, maybe forever) :o) Listen closely to his very refined tone with clarity and pureness not heard in many clarinetists and his impeccable phrasing and control of notes... Every note is perfectly balanced and the flow of the music so good that I can't believe anybody can play this GOOD! I mean this guy put some monumental effort and genius into it. The BP orchestra is also very, very excellent. The sound quality is not perfectly because it's an old recording, but musically there is no equal. He plays PERFECTLY and no other CD comes close!! You have to believe me and listen to this CD.

If your daughter plays it with a clarinet in B flat, not A, Music Minus One Laureate seriese is a choice. Harold Wright plays a teaching solo.
