 A couple Questions..
Author: Won Kim

I'm recently trying to find a string quartet who can play the Brahms Quintet with me. There are some really good string players in my school and some of them are my friends. The problem is that I can't find any reason to tell them let's work on the pieces. I don't know about any competition and I don't want to play it for the competition. What I'm worrying about is that is it a good idea or just wasting time? We might be able to play at the school auditorium at the school concert but there are not many music fans in my school. Should I find for some other opportunities later or should I ask them to play?

The other question is about Stolzman. I read some comments in this site that his recording of Mozrat concerto is not very good. However, I'm really impressed with his recording of Brahms Quintet. Is it a good recording or are there much better ones? Thanks

Ask your friends and tell them it's just for fun. They might actually like to work on something without worrying about a competition or performance.

After all what is the worst that could happen? They might say no and that's not a tragedy. They would still be your friends.

Music is supposed to be fun. Maybe having a group for fun will be refreshing.

Competition and auditions are just a teachers' trick to make you practice more! (please note that I don't disagree at all!) Indeed music is about fun, pleasure and sharing. I was a lonely pianist until I discover the clarinet a few months back. What a pleasure to be able to play in whatever combination from duet to orchestra and share your passion with other musicians! And what a better choice than the Brahms (probably the best quintet with clarinet ever written - guess I am on for a debate here...) to make it live. Go and ask your friends, you don't need any reason, the beauty of music and playing it together is the best justification you have!

Your reason could be just to begin working together as a group. Then you might find opportunities to perform as a group and find other works to play. Local nursing homes always have openings for an evening of music from amateur musicians. Who knows what might come from your putting a "team" together?

It's never a waste of time playing music you enjoy, Won Kim.
I discovered a long time ago that people like to have fun and they are attracted to people who are having fun. If you start playing by yourself pieces you like, where others can hear that you are having fun playing, they will want to join you.
There is no copyright on this idea... it's Free :) and it works :)

I agree that playing music should be enjoyable or fun. If you want to view a movie that depicts such enjoyment see "Intimate Lighting" or the docu of the Ying 4 doing their Iowa/Dvorak thing.

Hmm, go for it ... but the players had better be good, I've played the viola part of the Brahms, it ain't easy (technically) but it's very enjoyable. Just do it!!
