 New Wooden Clarinets
Author: Julia

Hi, I was wondering about Selmers and are they reliabl? My clarinet just broke, and I'm getting a new Selmer from an internet company. It is wooden. I heard that new wooden clarinets are really hard to paly on at first. Is this true?? How long will it take to break it in?? Lastly, is there anything I can do to help this process speed up?

Thanks so much.

Selmer makes a very good clarinet and they are reliable. And they should not be hard to play at first. But, every clarinets (including the same models) play differently. You should have the mail order company send you 3 Selmers of the same model to try out. They do this all the time. Also, the mouthpiece you use will also determine how hard it is to play your clarinet. Once you receive your Selmer, you should literially try out at least 20 mouthpieces. You'll be amazed at how differently your Selmer will sounds with all these different m/p. Most custom m/p manufactures will send you m/p's to try out too. Good luck! Paul

Hi, Julia -
Just to kick things off... Selmers have always been 'reliable' as far as I know. I've never heard of wood horns being hard to play at first. It may feel a little different than the one you're used to so, in that sense, the new clarinet needs to break You in :)
Clarinets aren't like cars but I know some folks seem to think a prescribed regimen for increasing playing times is the way to go with a new instrument. You're sure to get more responses about this and what, if anything, can speed things up for you. I don't know of any. Just enjoy playing on a nice, new instrument.
Happy tootin' :]

My personal experience with Selmer clarinets: I think they're great horns, I personally, love their keywork and stylish "feel".

Among the folks who recomend a "break-in" period are those who make Buffet clarinets (in their literature packed with the instrument.)

Be aware that the multiple clarinet option has a time limit on it, and if you pass the limit, you will own all 3 instruments.
