 reed company in Florida

Earlier someone posted a link to a clarinet reed company in Florida. Since my son has been having problems with Vandoren V12s (and reading other peoples' post I'm discovering that his problems are not unique), we're loking around. The owner of this company claimed that a large majority of his reeds are performance quality. Can someone provide the link for me? Thanks.

Gary --

I believe that reference was in a recent posting by Ken Shaw. The company is Davie Cane and they market Mozart reeds and Gonzalez "For Our Friends" reeds. The former is supposed to be similar to the older Olivieri reeds, the latter similar to the Morre reeds. I'll try now to post the link to their site. If it doesn't work, a search (I like the google search engine) using Davie Cane as your search words should get you there.

I like the Gonzalez reeds a lot. The jury is still out on the Mozart reeds. Somedays I like the reeds, other days, I am not impressed. I really like the cane I got from them. I have made some really good reeds from them.

I picked up some Gonzalez reeds this summer at the Clarinetfest in New Orleans.

I didn't start trying them until just recently. The "For Our Friends" reeds (by the way - Gonzalez execs, if you are reading this, change the name - it's an AWFUL choice) remind me very much of the old Morre. The cut is almost identical, but that is strictly by eye, as I haven't measured it.The overall length of the reed, however, is slightly longer than the V-12. The 10 that I have tried all played reasonably well right out of the box, most needing little to no adjusting at all. There were 2 "lollipops" (perfectly adjusted reeds that needed nothing but careful breaking in).

I've now prepared all 10, and the overall quality is excellent. They produce a nice tone, perhaps not as bright as the V-12, but with a distinctive ring. They have also seemed to hold up well and haven't given up like some of the more popular brands.

Would I permanently switch from V-12's? I'm really not sure, but it is nice to know that there is another brand of reed that has a sweet sound and (at least for now) good quality control.

I will definitely keep a few boxes on hand for the times that the V-12's are having their "stubborn moments" ...GBK

My impression so far on these reeds is that they are very nice cane and good reeds. Very nice sound, tone color, flexibility, playability, response, etc. I am planning on getting more so that I may do a long term evaluation with a larger number of reeds. I think they are definitely worth a look!
