I've come across a piece requiring multiphonics on a few notes. The higher note is not specified so I just want a way to make a nasty sound on top of the basic note. The notes are D E & F below the stave and the 3rd space C & C sharp.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated (apart from "turn down the gig")

I'm not an expert, so maybe I shouldn't be the first one to chime in. But, for the first three notes you mention, try opening the register key while playing them. Of course, this will give you the note a twelfth higher. Then, gradually slacken your jaw. At some point, you should get both notes sounding simultaneously. I would guess that for the C & C-sharp, you might do something similar, except you would lift your left forefinger as if playing in the higher register.

Eoin,
Many thanks for those fingerings, they work surprisingly easily.
I note you make no suggestions for the higher notes. Would I be right in thinking that it is unfeasible to create this effect from notes in the middle register? Should I just tell the composer that it isn't normally done. Are there any examples to prove me wrong? I do love telling composers when they've done something silly!

Get Philip Rehfeldt's book "New Horizons for Clarinet, 2nd edition" for a huge number of multiphonic fingerings. Not all of them work on all clarinets, but it'll give you a better idea of what's available.
