I recently got three CDs, two of which are recording by Paul Meyer. One has the Mozart, Busoni and Copland Concertos . His articulation is so clean. The last mov't of the Mozart has a wonderful flow to it. And the articulation never hinders that sense of flow in the least bit. He carries you along. And the Copland is just as great. The cadenza, I've not heard anyone play it quit that quick and, in my opinion, definitively. The feel throughout is just so relaxed in the first part and so rhythmical after the cadenza.
The other CD was Max Bruch's Concerto for clarinet & Viola and the Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano. The performances here are first rate, in my opinion. The music, especially the eight pieces, are past romantic, they are full of feeling and caressing inevery way. This music really turned me on. I know it is really Max Bruch who is to be credited for writing these in the first place but Paul Meyer and Gerard Causse (viola) and Francios-Rene Duchable (Piano) simply bring this to life. Pretty sensual music. All I ever heard before was the violin concerto of Bruch. But now.....
1. I now have a new picture of Max Bruch in my mind.
2. I have new admiration for Paul Meyer. I now know why he was written as one of the most all around great clarinet players we have today on this board a while ago.
I <b>had</B> to share this. Anything else outstanding that Paul Meyer has recorded that should be paid attention to?

I forgot to add that he also has a recording of the Weber Concerti #1 and #2 along with the Concertino. It's on Denon #CO - 79551
Again, played beautifully, but I prefer the Jon Manasse versions...GBK

Hmm, I find your "definitive" comment a little difficult to come to terms with, surely definitive Mozart is that which is played on a "basset" clarinet (whatever it's called) with the orchestra, also playing on "period instruments". Don't get me wrong, I love the Mozart concerto on modern clarinets, too, I just prefer the "authentic" approach - this is my opinion, by the way. I find Mozart's orchestration in the Clarinet Concerto wonderful and clear, hence, the period instrument versions seem to clarify this for me ... Schuman's symphonies never sounded so thin and wonderful until I heard performed on "romantic" instruments.

One thing to notice about Meyer's playing on records is the smoothness with which he negotiates the register break. Very nice. The ending phrases of the first movement of the Bruch concerto are a good example of this (on the a clarinet).
Another good record he made is the Strauss Duet-Concertino on Sony Classical.

Great thread, everybody! I always like to get comments on artists and their CDs by our experienced regulars. I've got one of Meyer's CDs and will now be looking for more (also anything by Manasse).
Is Paul any relation to Sabine and Wolfgang?

Sabine and Wolfgang Meyer are sister and brother. Both of them play Wurlitzer German system instruments. Paul Meyer is not related to them. He plays Buffet.
Paul Meyer is one of the really fine players. I think I have all his recordings, and they're all winners.

diz - When I say "definitive", I mean it more in terms of the musicality that he puts into the Mozart.
I, too, appreciate the "real" instrument that the Mozart Concerto should be played on. Both work for me <b>if done with good style</b>.

Paul Meyer also performed the Brahms op.120 with French fellow Eric le Sage on RCA 74321 877602 (with Eric le Sage solo in the piano sonata op.5 #3 as a bonus!)

Sorry to drudge up such an old topic. But I've got to mention another Meyer Recording.
Pleyel Concertos, plus Danzi Sinfonia Concertante (Denon CO-78911).
Just got this in the mail yesterday. Great concertos to listen to, sounds like it'd be fun to play. And Meyer's approach is just amazing. This is my first recording of his, but for sure not my last.

I'm also a huge fan of Paul Meyer - I've got four recordings of him (the French Clarinet Art, 20th Cen Unaccomp, Bruch w/viola and one of him doing the Weber Grand Duo Concertant).
I realize this is an old thread but I thought I'd plug for Meyer's Weber Grand Duo recording. Its on a CD with both concertos and the concertino. Walter Boeykins (sp?) performs the concertos and concertino with orchestra and Paul Meyer does the Grand Duo. Great stuff. Pretty inexpensive CD too.
I always plug for <www.arkivmusic.com> - search by performer.
