I've been playing the clarinet for 18 years and also suffer from asthma. Unfortunately I have not have the experience of marching whilst playing. I expect this is quiet difficult!

Sometime I have a slight attack simply because I'm thinking about it. When I'm walking to the shops or thinking do I have an inhaler in my pocket. The fact that your worried about playing demisemiquavers (32nd) may not be helping. Can you play long smooth phrases whilst marching. If so try to think of them as one phrase and not a row of back lines and dots. Be confident in what you are playing and if necessary as your musical director to simplify your part to give you time to breathe.

Ask your specialist when you should use you medicine.

Should it be just before you start marching/playing or perhaps 15 minutes before.

Are you warming up properly. Think of an athlete, they start with a long slow warm up. Are you doing the same on instrument and on foot?

You mention you have other allergies, perhaps these are the source of your problem, especially if your away from home on camp.

My final advise is enjoy your playing and don't try anything that will damage your health.

I hope this has sent your thought waves going!!!!!!

Keep in touch, Simon
