 Buffet's Vintage Clarinets

Has anyone played on/own these. I played on a demo from Muncy Winds at the Texas Music Educators Association convention last February and fell in love with the response. I've been trying to get in contact with a few stores, Howarth, Weiner, and such about prices, but if anyone knows off hand how much each the Bb and A go for roughly I'd much appreciate it. I'm seriously considering taking out a loan of some sorta along with a trade in of my current R13 to purchase a Bb and A at the end of summer. My professor plays them, and I love the way he sounds on them (we use the same mpc and barrel setup - Robert Scott) and when I played that one last year it felt amazing.

Thanks for any info!

In November, when I spoke to Mark at Fred Weiner's, they were selling the Vintage Bb for $1950...GBK

I'm playing currently on an R13 that was purchased sort of as a Birthday/Christmas/Graduation present in October of 1999. I love the horn, it took me through many days of 4hr plus practicing that it took to make TMEA All State. I'm playing on a Robert Scott 36108 mouthpiece and one of his barrels measured at 68mm purchased specifically to help tuning, though it had brought many other benefits I'm grateful for.

Like I state though, I fell in love with the sound and response of the Vintage that I tried last year, and am looking forward to playing on one for a few moments again this year.

Thanks for any input.

Jose -

My first Buffet was an R-13 made in around 1960. Compared with the current model, the outside dameter was smaller, the register key vent was (I think) higher, and the placement of the holes was slightly different.

I played several Vintages at a Buffet show, and it was like slipping into an old, comfortable pair of shoes. The Vintage really does play like the original R-13. Basically, you put up with some intonation problems and a throat Bb that's even fuzzier than on the current R-13. In return, you get a sweet, "characterful" tone, harder to play really loud, but easier to play with a variety of colors.

You should definitely try the Vintage. Be sure to take along a tuner and check the intonation carefully, though.

Best regards.

I just bought a Vintage two weeks ago. I agree with you Ken, somehow,it's a little harder to play louder than my E11. But the notes on the clarion register are really sweet and fluid. and the low notes are "very tuned"(sorry, couldn't find a better word). But I have no problem with the throat Bb, it's a lot clearer than my E11( not to mention my low C#) I love it!!!

Thank you all for the advice and info... I emailed Weiner and they quoted 1950 for a Bb and !995 for the A... I'm wondering what kind of deal Muncy and others will have at TMEA in about a month. But I do think that about 4000 is a good deal.

I know some things were moved and done differently compared to current R13s, but I really think I liked them. I didn't have a tuner on hand, but one thing I love was that I could play an altissimo D to F at nearly at ppp on the same mpc/reed setup I have now which is hard as heck to do on my R13.

Thanks again!
Jose
