Does anyone have any opinions/experiences with Amati clarinets. I got a catelog from one of those mail order outfits, and it has a full line of Amati clarinets. I had never even heard of them. How long have they been around? The prices look attractive.
Specifically, I am looking for a good Eb clarinet.

I've heard both good and bad about Amati. Mostly, I've heard bad. I've also heard the intonation is a pain, and they are mechanically inferior to the big 4: Yamaha, Leblanc, Buffet and Selmer. But, I do not know from personal experience, so my words are worth nothing.

I've played an Amati A clarinet six years ago, for 6 months. The general intonation and pitch was bad, even for the C mayor scale. But I've heard that the firm has improved their manufactures techniques.
I think the best is go and try personally some clarinets.

Use the bulletin board's search engine for "Amati" without the quotes. There was a thread about this maker awhile back with some detailed information and evaluation from someone who was quite knowledgable about the company and the brand. Among other things, he noted that there is a significant difference in quality between Amati's made when Czechoslovakia was part of the Soviet Union and those made subsequent to the breakup.

I guess one would have to play a lot of different clarinets to be a good judge....without that it's just opinions. I play one and,yes, the intonation is not perfect but the workmanship is excellent....and it hasn't cracked...yet. My impression is that clarinet snobs tend to bad rap the horn which is unfortunate because it's a good instrument for the money.

I have a Buffet R13 Bb soprano, and a Selmer Series 9 bass, and those are capable of playing atrociously badly unless I force them to behave. All the horns I've played are imperfect, and I hate to hear of a brand being placed permanently and forever beyond consideration. I have heard rumors of improvement in the Amati line, and think it would be worthwhile for some disinterested but qualified player to give us a report on the horns. I'd like to know. Graham Golden has been selling them, and he is a frequent visitor to this site. Perhaps Graham could lend someone a horn to review? Who should we have test it? Any nominations?
