 'bugle calls'

hello all...
earlier today i learned about doing the 'bugle calls' with the clarinet while fingering the third-line B. but i am unsure as to what this does in relation to tonguing... can someone clarify?

What do you mean? To do the bugle call thing, you usually have to tongue every note while changing the air pressure with the bell partially blocked.

You're making harmonics, as you say, like a bugle. Although, in my opinion, a bugle sounds much better :o|
Personally, I never discovered any real world practical use for that particular set of harmonics except maybe as practice for upper register ones if or when you're of a mind to go there.
Your question is whether to tongue or not to tongue. I've found that it works either way so... do whatever you want. Doesn't make any difference to me :o)

My teacher and I have worked on this too, using a wine bottle cork to stop up the bell. I can do it really well without tounging it, so I don't see why it's necessary.

OK that is what I was wondering.... what is the objective of making the harmonics? I've seen it done where the air is partially blocked from coming out of the bell.

Well, I guess you c'd stuff a cork in it and take it off, blow it like that. That's funny enough. It gives me the dizziness already.
I mean, if you gotta make a ruckus like that... let the whole World hear you.
Clarinets already got a rep as social misfits and outcasts. Now you want us goin' around blowin' bugle calls an' stuffin' corks up our horn's noses. Whatta you think that looks like? Would you talk to somebody like that?
See what we got started here? Something like this gets out and first thing you know someone's gonna Popularize it.

You want that kinda reputation followin you around? Not me. I can't stand it anymore. I'm takin up tuba. They got a reason for acting like they do. This has gone too far.

Hi Lisa L. - we just got back from the opera!

It's really to work on tongue positioning - using the tongue position alone (with opening the throat along with it) to create the notes. Later, when you actually finger the note correctly <b>and</b> have the back of tongue in the correct position ypu'll fund you have a richer sound to your note.

Lisa,

Mark is 'right-on'. This is a common excerise, used when learning to "voice" a note. The position of the tongue is so very important. (and so often overlooked)
When doing this excerise, I recommend tonguing each note. It's a bit tricky at first, you have to stop the bell with just the "right" covering. To much, it doesn't work, to little it doesn't work.
Have fun with this exercise....see if the quality of your altissimo register doesn't improve very quickly.

The purpose for doing the "bugle call rag" with the bell stopped up is to help correct tongue position and improve and focus sound. But I think that it is a mistake to characterize simply as "opening" your throat more. While it is necessary to keep your throat relaxed to keep the air flowing (as opposed to "choking it off") and important principal is to also arch the back of the tongue higher (like a cats hiss) to accelerate and help focus that air supply from the "open" throat. And "viola!!!!!!" when you arch the back of your tongue, and provide good breath support, the "bugle call" harmonics are easier to play. Just don't use them when you play "for real." Good Clarineting!!!!!!!!!!! (and good morning revelle to you all)
