 Clarinet Summer Programs
Author: Andge

Hi!

This summer I'm interested in attending a summer program to improve my clarinet skills and get to know other players. I live in Asia, and I would love to attend a program in Europe or in North America. What is a good program between two to four weeks long? I know that the compeition is tough for auditions. Is there a good program where the audition requirements are not too hard? How much would it cost? Thank you.

I don't know the costs right off hand, but there are places such as Brevard, Tanglewood, Aspen, and the National Repertory Orchestra. This is just to name a few. There is also the Blossom festival in Ohio, where you can study with Frank Cohen, but this is pretty difficult since he only accepts a couple of students. If this is your first time for something like this, you might want to do some research, and attend a summer school a bit closer.

Good luck.

Shawn

There is Cannon Music Camp in Boone North Carolina at Appalachian State University which is a good music camp..........you get weekly clarinet lessons (now this camp it is for all instruments), daily theory classes, daily band or ochestra(which ever one you get in) classes. It is 4 weeks long..........

Are you in college or high school? Many programs have specific age limits.

The new england music camp is a great summer camp, especially for clarinetists. You can look at it at www.nemusiccamp.com. There are many good teachers and an amazing atmosphere (maine). I am 17, and my personal clarinet teacher from the camp is the clarinet teacher at one of the schools I am looking at for a performance major (if that makes sense). The cost is about $2800 a month, but you can get scholarships and other rate reductions easily. I suggest if you are under 18 that this would be the best place to look. Also, the auditions for it are not as cutthroat as saw greenwood or interlochen, yet still really good players.

If you're high school age or younger, you may want to look into Interlochen, which is in Michigan . (www.interlochen.com ? perhaps .edu or .org) Before 10th grade and older must go for 8 weeks, younger can go for 4 or 8. Great ensembles, great teachers (Robert Spring! etc.) ... it can get pretty competitive, but there's also opportunity to experiment in other arts areas not just music, if thats your bag... good luck!
