Author: Ray Swing

First, thanks to Daniel & Dee for bring my attention to the Baermann Method Book about a year ago. Now my question: What does it mean when in many of the exercises the notation *______ Triangle with a dot in the middle mean?
Thanks in advance.

This is not any type of standard musical notation. I believe that it is to call the attention of the student and teacher to the note sequence itself. Based on the particular sequences that are so marked, my guess is that the student is supposed to keep the right hand fingers in place when going from a clarion note to the throat notes of G, Ab, A, and Bb. Looking through my copy, this marking occurs ONLY on crossing the break when these throat tones are part of the sequence. Unfortunately, my copy has no text commentary so this must be classified as an opinion.

I agree with Dee. *________ keep your right hand down when crossing the "break". Happy playing

Thanks Dee. Your Answer is obviously correct. I am furious at myself for not having been able to analyze and arrive at the obvious, logical answer. Incidentally, my Baermann doesn’t have any notations either. I wonder if the original had any explanatory or instructional information.

No need to kick yourself. I've been playing a long time and had to really look for the pattern.

Perhaps the Baermann book is really intended to be used under the guidance of a good instructor.

Dee is correct. I have an old Baermann book which specifically states that one should sustain the fingering from the "star" until the "triangle-dot" sign--presumably for smoother execution across the "break".
