 Tone color?

Just had a copy made of a favourite mouthpiece (Meyerowitz) and knowing the maker (Ackerman) produces nice brown mp's to go on his reproduction boxwood instruments I asked him about colour possibilities. He said anything was possible so I just asked him for the brightest thing he had. I now have a very garish bright yellow mp that looks more like a cycling accessory but sounds great. I love it. I couldn't resist a gold coloured ligature to accompany it. Don't be stuck with a boring old black one, lets branch out.

How about a strawberry favored reed to "top it off???" Have fun--that's really the "bottom line" in what we clarnetists are all about--and Good Clarineting!!!!!!!

I really like the look of the black and red swirled Vandorean mouthpiece. I have a B45 profile 88 in this color scheme and wherever I played it I recieved complents on cow "cool" my mp was.

The grossest think I've ever seen imho is any mouthpiece in the clear variety. When the condesation builds up it is not a pretty sight. I don't know how they play (I'll probably try one one of these days) but if they play well who cares about the "peep show" as its what the ears pick up that matters.

The late Everett Matson showed me a mouthpiece used in the Chicago Symphony by his teacher, Ralph Lindemann. It was the most violent, Day-Glo yellow you can imagine.

Whatever stirs your coffee.

When I was in gradeschool we would dip our reeds in cinnamon flavoring. Our band director was totally disgusted with it. After a couple of times I stopped because it clogged up the reed and I was a poor kid and couldn't afford to replace them as often as my "cinnamon hooked" friends.

jez...I'm not sure if you saw this the first time we had the discussion on color.

But, by popular request, here it is again (to brighten your day): ...GBK

Personally, I think the colors can be too distracting to the "audience," should it be close enough to be able to distinguish it or them. There is a most definite relationship between colors, stress levels and people's well-being.

Sitting in a concert hall, away from the orchestra, it might not make much of a difference, as distance makes it more difficult to distinguish and/or define very small objects well, including their true colors, but in even a large room during an audition or a recital, it might make all the difference in the world if the color distracts or annoys anyone or everyone. Especially on an instrument the typical color of a clarinet.

Under those conditions, the bright, garish colors can be a most definite detractor to your music, unless you are going to play in a "show" band. There, wild colors are usually very much accepted.

In the recent past, my wife changed our bedroom curtains from a light, powder blue to a medium, "girlish" pink. I didn't mind the color choice just for that reason, in fact, I carry a soft pink Swiss Army knife (don't ask!) However, they added a strong, reddish cast to the room so that the first time I walked into it chills ran up my spine and I even felt my heart accelerate and the adrenolin rise! It literaly felt as if I had walked into the threshold to hell!

Well, you had to be there.

I studied a lot of practical psychology in school, along with my major and minor courses and I knew about the effect of colors on the psyche, but I had never been personally faced with such a drastic sensation due to color effects. Especially as I've always been accused of being "too stoic," it was shocking to the max.

Anyway, just another opinion.

When I perform on my crystal mouthpiece, the subsequent questions from others are almost never ending. (Oh wow, is it plastic? / I didn't know you could get a clear one?/ Is it expensive?/ Is it a special order?/ Does it hurt your teeth?/...etc.. etc...etc...)

I can hardly imagine playing on something yellow.

Get ready for the questions! ...GBK

Joseph, I once had one of these swirly red/black mouthpieces (Only because it sounded good at the time) . Everyone said it looked like smeared lipstick :-} Bad enough for a woman, but a man??
