 good reeds

I am using Vandoren size 4 reeds and I was wondering if the Vandoren reeds (the blue box kind) are the top of the line...

I went to the music store a few nights ago and noticed another Vandoren box...it's gray...what's the difference between the reeds in the blue and gray boxes? Sorry I don't have any technical words to describe each reed...all I know is the color of the box;)

The blue box are regular vandorens, and the grey box contains V12 reeds. They are thicker cut, and run a little harder than the regular. I personally play on the V12s, they seem to have better response.

Softer. By about a half strength. I play 3 1/2 V12s, but it hurts if I play 3 1/2 regulars ..

When you get a good V-12, it's great! But don't expect the whole box to work!

V12's are thicker at the blunt end but thinner at the tip. Maybe that's why they don't last long.

You might also consider the Vandoren Blackmasters. Sized for Viennese mouthpieces, they are a bit shorter than French cut reeds, but fit just fine on most French mouthpieces. They are also thicker like the V-12, but have more wood at the tip as well. They come in a black box and run a little harder than the blue boxes.

Vandoran says the V12 is thicker at both the butt and the tip.
