Why do you reject cookies, William? I thought we use them as a convenient way to return to (clari)'net places we like to visit regularly. I don't think they're harmful. Am I mistaken?

Cookies aren't harmful to the computer, but they may be harmful to your privacy.
Unlike a virus, a cookie can't read or write files on your computer, or make your computer do odd things. In that sense, cookies aren't harmful.
However, some websites use them to track your browsing behaviour.
It is possible to set up Internet Explorer such that only sites you trust can't use cookies. I wonder whether anybody bothers?

I set up my system to reject cookies by click trackers but accept all others unless they're session cookies - I let all sessoin cookies through (session cookies live only while that instance of your browser is running - as soon as you close your browser they're gone).
The cookie set by the BBoard just sets your name & email into the post window.

I use a program called "Guard Dog" to screen my cookies. Since I had an online business at one time, it was necessary to have some kind of security program in addition to those provided through PayPal and other .coms my customers used to send payment. Also, I don't like the "click" cookies (as Mark mentioned) either. I found myself flooded with "spam" mail when I didn't use the Guard Dog to block the cookies. I got on all kinds of weird and unwanted mailing lists. Even got lots of stuff through the regular mail that could have only come through someone tracking my internet habits. So, now when I come online at Sneezy my Guard Dog asks me if I want to allow cookies for this site. I click "yes" and my name and email address appear in the proper place. If I click "no" it will come up like I'll show you next.

this is what happens if I click "no" when Guard Dog asks if I want to allow cookies on this site.

Mark, your terminology for cookieds does not match my (version 6) internet explorer's term "first party" & "third party" cookies. How do these terms relate to your terminology?
