 APB on Emil Waldteufel's music
Author: Peter

Anyone have any ideas on where to look for Emil Waldteufel's music?

Most especially the music for the Estudiantina Waltz, but also Tres Jolie.

I've tried several locals and the ABC Tune Finder. It's probably useless to try to contact B&H. They rarely answered when they were in good shape, so it's doubtful to hope they might answer now.

Any suggestions will be most appreciated.

Peter - Having found a "difficult-to-find" piece of American 1900's sheet music [piano and words] via a Yahoo search, "sheet music", I looked again at http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/ , {Johns Hopkins U] . They show, in copyable form, 2 Wald's., Skaters Waltz and a polka . Many S-M sites are retreived by this search, so, Good Luck. I would guess that orchestral arrangements, such as for L'Estudiantina would still be under copyright, so be careful!! Don

Don,

Thanks for the tip, however:

I tried to get at the music through the site you suggested and it says "no matches."

Is there a special trick to it?

Peter - I used "Waldteufel" to retrieve the 2 pieces, I may try again, and on another site to see what's out there. Don

Peter - Eureka !!, [as in "I have found it"] Via AOL "sheet music" search ,Try http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/smhtml/smhome.html . Lib of Congress Amer. sheet music, 1870-1885 , via Waldteufel gives 20 some pieces, L'Estud. is given and copyable for ?small [period] concert band? clars and cornets in A !! Quite a few pages, but large enough and "clean" for enlargement, I copied off the 1st cl part. HAVE FUN !! Don

I am at the office now, so I can't check, but my salon orchestra had a couple books of waltzes of that era that we would play on occasion. I'm sure there were a couple of the Waldteufel pieces. Arrangements were probably violin I & II, cello, bass, clarinet, trumpet, piano... it has been a while and we performed them with just two violins, cello, clarinet and piano.

If this is the sort of thing you are looking for, e-mail me.

John
