I have a contest coming up, and I am playing "Waltz Fantasy" by Mozart (arranged by George Waln). I would like to download it so I can listen to it at home when I practice. I haven't been able to find it. Does anyone know where I can get it or a CD that it is on? It would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Gwen

Pardon my abundant ignorance, but what, prithee is Mozart's waltz fantasy? It's obviously based on a 3/4 piece of Mozart ... but which? I await someone's erudite posting with anxious anticipation.

Diz...Unfortunately I do know the answer.

The "Waltz Fantasy" is a rather banal arrangement for clarinet and piano by George Waln of Mozart's K.573 - "The Nine Piano Variations in D major on a Minuet by Duport" - written by Mozart in 1789.

Skip the 3 minute piano/clarinet arrangement - listen to the original...GBK

I played it a while ago...I suppose it does mutilate Mozart a bit, but I liked it when I was 12 (I played it for NYSSMA in seventh grade, I think). If you can't find a recording of the original piece, try inputting it into a computer notation program- guaranteed to have perfect rhythm, if little expression.

GBK- out of curiosity, how did a minuet become a waltz? I'll have to dig it out and play it. I thought the waltz evolved rather after Mozart.

Micaela - you're on the button there. The "waltz" was a romantic invention (for want of a better word) - the 3/4 factor obviously originating with the Laendler (Austria). The "waltz" then became the "hip" beat for people to dance to ... hence the Strauss' and the fortunes they made by composing their (IMHO boring) waltzes.

Micaela...K.573 by Mozart is actually quite interesting.

It was written by Mozart while in Potsdam on April 29, 1789 (it was later published in 1792, just after Mozart's death). The work is based on a minuet by Jean Pierre Duport, who was a prominent cellist and later the director of Frederick the Great's orchestra.

When Mozart was presented to Frederick William II, he composed this work as a gift because Frederick William II had been Duport's pupil on the cello.

How this work got transposed (mangled?) into a "Waltz Fantasy" is beyond me.

Anyone have George Waln's email address? ...GBK

Try this link from Amazon.com, it is rather short and only a sample but it might give you a slight idea (you could probably find more on Amazon)

Good searching.

Gwen - Having had some success in searching out older "sheet music" [both piano score and early concert band arrangements, downloadable] via a web search, I suggest you try the Levy collection [Johns Hopkins edu] and the Library of Congress collection. They both yielded via Waltz AND Mozart the "Oxen Waltz", and the LC yielded a piano-flute arrangement and others. I have the sites in my Fav. Places, so if you need, I'll post them. Luck, Don
