 music notation etc

Having recently resumed playing clarinet after a lengthy absence I am discovering a number of notations of all kinds on scores that I don't recall from the "old days". For example I now find that a capital letter C ith a slash through it is "cut time"....duh! Thankfully the young girl who sits next to me is patient but I still feel stupid. The method books I have don't seem to include all this shorthand the modern composers seem to be using. Would welcome suggestions for publications that explain all this "shorthand" on modern scores.

Actually the "C with a slash through it" is quite an old notation. It's just coincidence that you haven't seen it before.

The best thing to do is to stop at a local band instrument store and get a music dictionary.
