New BBoard
Author: Mark Charette, Webmaster

The New BBoard is now up! Hopefully you'll like this one better; it should load faster, and it allows searches through the old postings.

I've kept the older postings around; I'll delete them as time goes on.

Sorry for the temporary inconvenience; hopefully this will be a better solution. If not, we'll go back to the old system.

Cheers,
Mark Charette@sneezy.org

I get a couple of 'unloaded pictures' symbols on the web page.

I think, it's the lines '<table cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0"><tr><td><img src="trans.gif" width=1 height=5 border=0></td></tr></table><center>' which my computer did not find (4 times)

Same here, both with the old messages and with the unloaded picture symbols.

This isn't taking any less time to load and i don't really care for the appearance...

I vote to bring back the old version.. there was nothing wrong with it...

other problem is that you can't see the replies on the main thread list so you are forced to go to the original mesage just to see what the replies are...

nor does the response window automatically have the original message to which you are replying in it so if there's a certain point in a long message that you wish to respond to, you have to either go up and cut-n-paste or type it by hand...

Did you see the "Quote Text" Button? If it doesn't work for you then you're using a very old browser.

I can't figure out why people say they can't see the old messages - they're there. I personally hated the old system's method of always quoting all the previous text - the messages got way too long. Maintenance was relatively difficult, and there was no search engine.

I vote to keep it for a couple of months, and then see what happens.

And guess what - I run a "benign dictatorship" here :^)

I also don't like how it doesn't show whether the next post down is a reply to a reply or a reply to the original message... it's just a simple list down...

I haven't been able to see the old posts either? and what bout those of us that were still involved in those older messages that have been cut?

Why do you need a search engine for a BB? I can understand it for something like the Klarinet Archive or Discography DB or something.. but not for an ongoing BB where you can scroll down and see what all the topics are.

The appearance is somewhat obtrusive instead of having just the text with the background behind it...

Please start new threads when desirable. I didn't like all the side threads. You did.

Why don't you click on the "old messages" link? That's where they were. Daniel - This is a changeover! I won't have 2 clarinet boards running simultaneously, and this one is easier to manage. I like the way it looks.

Because I could only keep 500 or so messages at a time. We had over 10,000 postings on the old board, and I had to delete 9500 perfestly good chucks of informations. The Klarinet Archives only has 60,000 - why should this bboard suffer from no archiving?

Daniel, for once, I'm going to be rude to you. Tough. Get used to this. I'll fine tune it as necessary to make it better, but it'll be a while. I spent a few months on the last one making it easier to use, but in the long run is was sucking egg. You're not the one who has to maintain the system and clean up when things go haywire. I'm the one.

Give it a rest. It isn't going away, at least for a while.

Mark -

You say:

Does this mean you're now archiving the messages you had previously simply deleted? And my deathless prose (and yours and everyone elses) will be preserved forever? WHOPPEEE! I'm seriously glad. If for no other reason, let's keep the new system, so that when someone asks a question that has come up before, we can simply link them to the prior discussion.

An Interesting Request - Best of Sneezy
Author: paul

Mark:

I got used to the new look and feel pretty quickly. It's prettier than the other one, and it does seem to pop up quicker. I guess it's okay.

However, I have an interesting request. Would it be possible to have a "Best of Sneezy" area of your BBS for the really good stuff, like Dee's listing of good drill books, comparisons of reeds across brands, comparisons of mouthpieces, typical try-out pieces, care for silver keywork, etc. These themes repeat themselves at least once every two weeks and seem to have pretty much "stock" answers. This would leave the bulletin board free for more interesting and unique problems.

What do you think of the idea? Could it be implemented using the information you have stored on your hard drive? What other subjects do you think the other regular Sneezy posters would like to see in this new area?

Actually, that's what Sneezy is - a compilation of different articles that have been posted here and on the Klarinet list, along with a few other sections. Check ot the "Equipment" section and you'll find a nicely polished article about "grenadilla", first posted here. There's already articles on beginner and internediate books - and if Dee wants to polish up her posting, it'll be included. She authored much of the "Beginner's Clarinet" article.

If in fact people looked around they'd find many of their answers elsewhere on the pages - but it seems a lot of people ask here first. That's one of the reasons that I switched to this system - there's a search button to find things that are already here.

But, Paul, you'll still find many of the questions asked yet again - and I don't really mind at all. We oldtimers on the Bulletin Board, like the old timers on the Klarinet mailing list, just have to point people back to the archives - and welcome new ideas as they're presented here. Sometimes the answer changes, too - as in the the answers for plastic reeds - there is a pretty good one now :^)

Cheers,
Mark C.

Thanks Mark,
Firstly for your response.
Secondly for running this BB which is constantly fascinating and which must involve you in an enormous amount of time and work.
I suppose my point was that it seems a shame to refer people back to an old link if this stifles lively discussion in the present day, which is the thing I most enjoy about Sneezy. Still I suppose its good to keep old threads to refer to. There must be an awful lot of repeated material, are you ever tempted to edit out anything.
I must have set a record for the oldest thread to be replied to.
