I recently commented to my teacher that I was having to put my reeds down rather far on the mouthpiece to get them to respond. He said they weren't down that far, that my mouthpiece pad was just sticking up. I didn't think much more about it, until a couple of days ago when I noticed that the pad seemed to sticking up a little too much on the mouthpiece. I moved it down, and noticed that I could actually see the tip of the mouthpiece! When I put my reed very close to the tip it played quite well, as have several of my reeds. Sad that it took a teacher to point out to me that it wasn't the tip of the mouthpiece I was seeing, but the top of the mouthpiece pad. And all these months I have been cursing Vandoren for my reed problems!

The thing you stick on to stop your teeth from chewing up the mouthpiece. Karel

I place my mp "cushions" a mm or so down from the tip, so to not have reed placement problems. Don

Actually, you can still curse Vandoren; the reeds are still a pain.

By your ritht thumb bend the reed to let its tip touch the mouthpiece tip.
If it does not touch the tip, i.e. bended into the window, it is too much down.
Reed/moutpiece tips should touch each other to close the window anyway. Down or up is limited by this condition. This was visually ascertained by Larry Teal, a renowned saxsophone professor.
