Does anyone here go to (or know anything about) the Hartt School, for clarinet? Is it relatively hard to get into? Does it compare with the top music schools? Any answers welcome!

All I've heard about Hartt is it's (excellent) conducting program under Harold Farberman. My conducting teacher studied with him years ago and he tells me stories about it every now and then. =)

I know Hartt is good--I live in CT. However, I would also consider West Conn, which also has a great faculty. The clarinet teacher there as turned around the clarinet section in just one semester from when she got there!
I am not advertising or promoting, but IMHO it seems that West Conn is overlooked. A lot of people have high regards for it. Me, being one of them.
Good luck in your search,
Kim L.

We live in the area, and my daughter has spent her high school years at Hartt, both at the College and in the Community Division, which serves pre-college students and non-degree folks. Hartt is one of the colleges at the University of Hartford, and is located in West Hartford, CT, on the edge of the city of Hartford. 2 hours to New York City, 90 minutes to Boston.
There is an incredible clarinetist who joined the Hartt faculty a few years ago---Richard Shillea, who has also taught at the Juilliard School for a number of years, and who is an extraordinary teacher and a teriffic person. He has a great studio, and is also the director of the Honors Chamber Music Program, called 20/20---the students in that program attend Hartt tuition-free, and receive wonderful performance opportunities and preparation for professional performance careers. Hartt also has music education, music management, theatre, opera, etc. The other clarinet teacher is the well-known Charles Russo, also at Manhattan School of Music. And speaking of conductors, Glen Adsit is a wonderful recent faculty addition and conducts the Wind Ensemble as well as other smaller ensembles.
Feel free to contact me off-line for more information or with questions.

1) Harold Farberman left years ago.
2) Mr. Shillea still teaches at the Juilliard prep division, but has never to my knowlege (and I have known him for many years) been on the college faculty. He is however, a great teacher. Be prepared to work hard.
3) If you are considering majoring in performance, stay away from any of the Connecticut state schools (except maybe UCONN)
