 Am i mad?

Basically... i have never given this a second thought, but i was recently told by a musician that i was mad!

I played keyboard/piano for about a year and got kinda bored so when i went back to school after my summer break i thought i would try the clarinet. I borrowed the school one which had no books or anything and just started practising. after 1.5 months i was entered for me Grade 4 exam (Forgot the music board now! An English one though, dunno if it is different around the world!) and then entered for my grade 5 theory straight after (which i didnt do in the end.)

After i did my grade 4 i dropped it as i have decided to persue (sp?) a career in the media. At my uni, i was speaking to a music teacher and he said i was mad for not continuing as i had potential, but i believe that that was luck more tha anything and wouldnt have been able to hack-it at uni... anyone got an opinion on that?

Dunno why, but my Clarinet is just sitting there gathering dust, dont really have the urge anyway *sigh*

Are you mad? No . . . not for your decision (though that still leaves lots of therapy sessions available for other points of madness.) The question is not could you have done it, but rather do you want to do it?

And while we're at it . . . what is "it"? If "it" is becoming a playing professional, that's one criteria for judging; if it's enjoying the instrument and getting a great deal of pleasure playing with different groups, enjoying the fellowship of musicians, and commiting yourself to that lifelong quest in search for the perfect mouthpiece and that one good reed in every box, that's what most of us end up doing. You don't have to be a star to be happy.

And on a parting note (middle C, I believe), consider the empty life of a piano player. No reeds, no mouthpieces, no marching piano bands, no breathing or embouchure issues . . . what the heck do they learn anyway? Perhaps the search for the perfect piano bench?

(I wonder if the material the piano is made from dictates its quality? Deep question for a tired mind . . . )
