Why is it?? (of course, other that the cold and the dry temperature)Is it safe to play my clarinet outside in a hot day??? I guess it is, because summers are more humid and, of course, not cold, right???

A day that is comfortable for you is comfortable for the horn. The only other problem would be the possibility of dropping it on a concrete sidewalk, etc.

When I had May Commencement, I played my wood clarinet outside. However, I would under no circumstances play my wood clarinet outside for the Macy's Parade. Other instruments have problems too. I've heard that flautists lips have stuck to their head joint. It's just better not to play outside.

Be prepared to get it out of the way of sudden rain, and watch for blowing sand which could jam the key rod bearings.

One Fourth of July park band concert, during the fireworks display and our annual rendition to the 1812 Overture, a spent artillary display cartrage fell into our set-up and missed our bassoonist by mere inchs. Too bad, however, it also missed our--often inept and musically challenged--conductor.

This is the same band and same conductor, who, during a Sunday afternoon park concert, had a dog wander in from the audience and "lift its leg" on his podium--much to the amusement of the front row. No, we were not playing "April Showers."

On another occassion, during a mid day concert on steps of our State Capitol, a wild deer almost ran through our band on its eventual way through the Capitol rotunda and out the opposite (Democratic) side of the building.

Then, of course, there are bugs which are always available for inhaltion, eye glass fun, and in-the-ears excursions.

But, inspit of the sun in your eyes, rain and bird droppings from the sky, wind to rearrange your music order and ants crawling your your legs, Good Clarineting the Outdoors Way!!!!!!!!!!
