That's funny, none of my mouthpieces produce a sound on their own. I'll have to sneak in there at night and check. ;-)
(sorry, I couldn't resist)

why would anyone get a bay? The old man doesn't know what he is doing and he is way over priced.

Bob, would you trade your clarinet plus two hundred dollars for a clarinet that clearly sounded and played better than your current rig? If the answer is yes, than paying two hundred dollars for a mouthpiece that sounds and plays better than what you are playing is reasonable.
How many Vandorens do you have to go through before you've paid the price for a handmade mouthpiece? That being said . . . I'm not one to bid $450 for a Kaspar I've never had a chance to play.

Choice of mouthpieces are always your personal taste, but Bay makes great products.

Aren't all products made by artisans and artists overpriced? I mean, really, Van Gogh only spent a few dollars on canvas and paint ...

I have know Charles Bay for over thirty years and would never characterize him as a "pompus ass." He is an energetic, outgoing person, always willing to engage in conversation no matter who you are. His commentary is always interesting and relavent to his area of expertise--that is , mouthpiece making and clarinet performance. He is opinionated, but always willing to listen to "your side" of the story. Hard to get in touch with--yes. Not always "on time" in his business dealings--yes. An "overpowering" personality--yes. A talented craftsman who believes in his products--yes (and always willing to explain them to you). He is the kind of person who, if asked what time it is, he will explain how he built his watch and how its wound. But it is truely a misrepresentation to describe Mr Bay in the terms that Dan Powell has chosen. Charles Bay is a musician, craftsman and gentleman deserving of our respect here in the clarinet community.

It is true, you mouthpiece doesn't produce that sound by itself. You must be doing something right also! Isn't it nice when your equipment works with you, tho?
Congrats!

OK, Bays mouthpieces don't even come close to Hawkins, pyne, smith, lomax or any of those great makers. His mouthpieces are junk and i admire anyone ability to make themselves think they have a good buy. Heck, ill go make a rubber blank and knock incorrect facing methods into it and then sell if 200 dollars, well im off to do that, bye!

By the way, Bob, I assume you play clarinet for a living, right? Since you're giving all of us such excellent advice. may I ask what illustrious orchestra you're playing in right now?
