 Selmer Info.

Does anyone have any information on the Selmer 10S II Bb Clarinet? I'm going around town testing clarinets to find one to buy and this one seems to give me about 20% more power in my sound and a terrific tone. Was this clarinet made for a specific type of music like jazz? What newer Selmers replaced this one and why? I'm kind of new at all this so any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Paul

See here: http://www.selmer.com/htdox/clar4.htm

My instrument is Selmer 10SII*(A=442Hz version). SInce its bore size is 0.56'' not ordinary Buffet/Vandoren 0.57", I selected a Chadash 'A' barrel(small bore) and a Greg Smith mouthpiece reamered with each other. Selmer C85-118 or 120 will also fit it, not Vandorens.

Its bottleneck is stuffiness although it has good projection and tonality.

Paul,

Selmer Paris is replacing the 10SII and the Prologue (high end intermediate horn) by the Odyssee which is now their pro entry level clarinet. I don't know if it is available in the US yet, it has been released here in France a few weeks back. I just bought it and it is a terrific value for money instrument. The retail price is around $1750 (expect 15/20% off in France from the retail price) and it comes complete with 2 barrels, a C85-120 mouthpiece and a Selmer light case. Please note that regular Vandoren m/p will fit in (I am using a B45).

Stephane (France)

It's been my understanding that the 10S II is supposed to be an all-purpose orchestral clarinet, similar to the Buffet R-13. They do have a very nice tone and if you like the one you're trying you should buy it. When you make your final deal, please remember to mention to the dealer that you have heard Selmer is about to stop making these. I hadn't heard that rumour, but it doesn't surprise me.

Thanks for all your input. It really helps! Just a little bit more info. I'm using a Blayman m/p (I again tried out literially over 30 m/p's to find this one. Including other Blaymans and just about every other brand you could think of. My teacher is a pro and has boxes of m/p. I'm now a big believer on trying out everything and in combination with everything else . . . barrels, ligs., reeds). Anyway, the salesman did say that the clarinet is not being made anymore. And he's asking $1,795. Is this a reasonable price? Thanks again! Paul

If you are getting a Prologue make sure you don't get the optional-extra left hand F/C lever.
It is (mal-)designed to give a huge heap of trouble, like slipping out from under the F/C key. Modification to overcome this is a real headache.

Shame on you Selmer! I hope the Odyssee has some better thought put into its design.

Paul:

I've had a couple of price quotations on the 10SII from two of the larger instrument retailers in the U.S. The best price I received was $1895.00.

You might could find a better price, but it wouldn't be worth it if the instrument wasn't as nice as the one you've already tried. If you like it, buy it. You'll still be getting a bargain.

Bulgarian wedding style players, like Ivo Papasov and Katherine Foster, prefer the older 10S models because of their "big sound". Nobody I know has tried a 10SII - it would be interesting to find out what they think of them.
