What is the view on ligatures like those made by Vandoren that are reversed and the screws are on the opposite side of the mouthpiece, such that the reed is held by either metal or cloth?

Since you asked, I seem to prefer the reversed ligs, Bonade, Luyben, Gigliotti and others for my Bb's. I'm trying to get suppliers to provide reverses for my alto and bass, no luck so far!! Dont particularly care for the Rovners [guess I'm just too old!] Don

I've used a Luyben since the mid 60's and have loved it since the first time I used it. I use it on a Kasper mouthpiece with VanDoren #4 reeds. The claim, I think, is that the Luyben, which has only four contact points, permits the reed to move more freely.

Hey Don, Jay Clark in Berkeley got my man a Bonade for Bari that was made for Bb. It supposedly just fits right on!
I love my Bonade, I used to use a luyben but the Bonade is metal and less variable (maybe, I'm not sure).

Bonade, bay and many others make inverted ligatures for the bigger clarinets.

I'm a new clarinetist. In my 7th month, but have begun to use a 27 inch flat black shoelace wrapped around about 6 times and have been quite happy with the results. If I change, I use an Daniels ligature which is primarily cloth rubber combination or something. The screws are on the reverse.

I'm an older amateur and have used standard and reverse ligatures from time to time and currently use a BG Revelation.I personally can't tell a bit of difference in sound quality between any of the ligatures. My preference for the BG is ease of use (only one easy to use screw). After seeing a number of pros through the years, I note most don't use any fancy, or inverted Ligatures. Most seem to use the old fashion standard run of the mill two screw ligature. Ray

I am a ligarture freek and tried almost everything.Here are my experiences:
Straight ligertures allows us to hold the upper screw tight and the lower screw loose.This makes the vibration of reed very freer.The inverted ligature makes the contact pressure more levelized. Now I prefer inverted ones and my individual experiences are:
1)BG ligature:It makes only imverse type and its Revelation has synthetic material to hold the reed with a wound thin plate to meet with the reed.This makes my sound obviously enhances high vibration ingredients,i.e. brighter sound.
2)Rovener makes also only inverted ones.The synthetic material contacts directly with reed.This makes my tones somewhat covered feeling.
3)Bay makes inverted ligatures made by very thin plate of metal plated by gold or rodium.They also makes bare metal one and with small strips of rubber like material.They say the latter will provide covered tones.I tried the former and felt it allows free vivration of reed.
4)Vandoren inverted ligature,black painted.I felt it too thin although this is paradoxical to my feeling about Bay.
5)Vandoren optima ligerture.We can change the three contact plates with the reed,which have different ditches in their surfaces. I did not like the feeling,the reason I do not know.
6)Bonade inverted and straight.I tried nickel inverted and gold plated straight.I like the straight one.I heard that they made a silver inverted one(not plated), I am quite interested in it and seaching it.
7)Now I use a inverted ligature of cupper plated with satin like 18K gold.It seems to enchance harmonics elements of reeed vibration.

I think that the Winslow ligiture allows the most freedom of vibration and harmonic resonance in the sound of any commercial lig on the market, but generally. the reverse ligitures are better--Bonade and BG ligs highly recommended after the W's.
