Lynn - er, come down under one day. You'll not be dissapointed. Also, our capital city orchestras aren't bad. Sydney and Melbourne are up there in standard with your top notch american orchestras. The other's are similar to good second level orchestras of Europe or Germany. Also, the Sydney Symphony recently toured to the US and were well received at Symphony Hall Boston. I heard the broadcast - gosh, what an acoustic!! The Sydney Opera House looks great from the harbour - but the concert hall's acoustic is dreadful. Why build a "fan shaped" auditiorium when Boston, Concertgebouw and Vienna's are all shoe box shaped for a reason? Silly really - silly architects.

My favorite clarinet piece: I don't play classical music myself but I like Sabine Meyer's rendition of K-622.

Ah - a great choice and a nice performance - you'd have to be seriously "odd" not to like the Mozart Concerto.

I always wondered about those acoustics.....We have the Hollywood Bowl here in California that also looks great but performers complain about the acoustics. I will definately come to Australia one day. My friends have gone and come back with a big smile!

One of my best friends is Dr. David Johnston of Sydney. He's the orchestra conductor for the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem's orchestra in Israel and he recently conducted the Olympic orchestra. He founded and teaches at the Weslyan Academy of the Arts in Sydney. If you know him, say hello for me. He's one of the finest violinists I've heard--and he loves clarinets!

Oh, My God!!! I certainly know him, but havn't been in touch for years. I was playing viola professionally at the time in 1983-1984. I remember him, via a friend of mine at the time. Yes, his violin playing is stunning - I remember he had an effortless, beautiful and tremendously virtuosic technique. If my memory serves me correctly, he's an ex-pat american (from California)? Can't quite remember.

He's not an expatriot--but he does hold dual citizenship. He's an Aussie by choice and an American by birth. David and Marianna are very, very, very dear to my husband and myself. We get to spend about a month each year in Jerusalem with them and I can't say enough good things about his ability and character. He's the finest conductor/player I've ever heard, worked with, or known. He's given a standing invitation to come to Sydney, but I hate long plane rides. If you have a chance to see or talk with him, please tell him he is highly regarded in Texas.

Brenda ... make the effort, Sydney's a nice town. The Sydney Symphony's a top class orchestra and there are many other fine reasons for visiting - not least of all to visit David and Marianna!

I've not seen the film. I hear David and Marianna have a breathtaking view of the harbor. We'll probably make it down there one day. I was invited to come and play with the ICEJ orchestra at the Sydney Opera house a couple of years ago and just couldn't make it. I wish I had done so because I've heard nothing but raves about the acoustics, etc. My friends who went were very impressed--especially the opera singers among our group.
