Hiroshi--
Can you tell me the name(s) of some prominent Japanese composers who write music for Western instruments? I am interested in composers who actively compose today, however, if there are some who are deceased, I'm still interested. I am particularly interested in composers who maintain national integrity-- use Japanese musical elements in their writing... thanks! Please email me pwusow@neo.rr.com

allthough i'm not hiroshi, i could help perhaps. I'm from the Netherlands (Europe) and 3 weeks ago the orchestra i play in had a Japanese.
I've just looked it up. Unfortunately i can't read the composers name, nor the title (because they are written in Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese signs, but not in any i can read)
The publishers name however IS in standard ABC:
Ongaku-no-Tomo Sha Corp. Tokyo Japan
While we were playing the piece it was called Rhapsody for Band, but i can't tell you if that's the real title of the piece

Paul,
There's always the most well-known Japanese composer (at least in the Western world), Toru Takemitsu. He's written many compositions for clarinet. Included below are pieces listed in the Sneezy Composition Database by Takemitsu. Other pieces to consider are "Clarinet Solitude" (published by Schott) by Joji Yuasa. This piece is for solo clarinet in B-flat and is simply gorgeous. It includes many colorful multiphonics and is very lyrical in quality.
Also consider "4 pieces in Bird Shape" by Yoshimatsu (published by Presser) for Clarinet and Piano. There are many others.
Someone to contact may be E. Michael Richards (emrichards@sprintmail.com) as he and his wife (The Tanasaki Duo) have had a lot of pieces written for Clarinet and Piano by Japanese composers.
Here's the list of Takemitsu pieces and good luck!!
Best,
Michael Norsworthy
