What other professional performing jobs are available to clarinetists, other then orchestras. And about how many seats open up each year for major orchestras in the US?

Go to your local Armed forces Recruiting Station. I am a clarinetist in the Army, and we are hurting for players and paying decent bonuses for coming in.

Brian--ATTENTION!!!!!!! If the armed forces would stop practicing age discrimination--top age for joining being set a 35--I would consider a second career as a militarty musician, and I'll bet a few other "old timers" would also. Some of us can play just as well (if not better) than the younger recruits and letting us join would leave those younger, more able-bodied men and women for the more rigorous"combat duty" stuff--we could take care of the music and serve our country as well. Disgusted "over the hill" Civilian Musician!!! BTW, Good Clarineting, and "at ease!" (carry on, your doing good)

Chamber music groups are great! For years I traveled locally with a wind quintet, and we did quite a bit of performing for special occasions and occasionally a concert featuring us alone. Consider doing school concerts, as well. Some school districts budget for concerts held for student assemblies. Also, join your local musicians union, and you can get known and get performance work from them, also. There are also some professional wind symphonies. If you form the intent to have chamber jobs, you may be surprised at the work you can net. At some of the trade shows I attend, there are duos or soloists who provide background music for the events. Hook up with a local flutist, pianist, and string player and work up some music to perform. Contact your local school districts and offer your services as a private teacher. Some districts even provide time during the school day for private students, or at least, small groups of students. you can do this without holding the position as the school's music teacher. You can do well. Good Luck! ...and be persistent

Thanks, I'm a college student right now, but undecided about what I want to do in music. I was just woondering what could be done with a degree in performance. I'm also a little worried about bills after I graduate. Only a little though (I'm only a freshman). Thanks for the ideas.
