 Weapon of reeds

May I bring out a old question, trust me, I really search for the old message but I couldn't get quite clearily information.

What kinds of "THING/TOOLS" you are using to manage your reeds?

For me, I am in Hong Kong, I am using a special plants, it is a kind of chinese medicine. In chinese, we call it "Wood Brush", for the medical usage of this, I don't know.
Let's thinks about it, a kind of plant, looks dark green mix with some yellow color, not too hard, very dry, you can broke it easily. It is a tube shape with the verticalness knaggy surface.

I tried to search some photo in internet but none. If you really want to know what is it, let me know, i will send you the digi photo. If there are some chinese medicine shops around your place, try go get some, just tell them "Wood Brush" or ¤ì¨ê(chinese, sorry). 1 US, you will get a huge pack, you can use them forever.

Back to my topic, when I want to manage my reeds, I make the "Wood Brush" and reeds wet first. "Wood Brush" become soft, and then place the reed on a glasses or some smooth surface, use the WET (not dry, beware) "Wood Brush" wear thin the reeds. Wear thin poco a poco ....

That's my weapon. I tried to use knife, lucky my fingers are still here. Some teacher tought me use very thin sandpaper, wera thin the back of the reed, but it seen not work (for me).

If you interesting on this topic, would you mind share some experenice of "how u manage your reeds?" Thanks!

Reed knife--and I still have all my fingers!!! Your "wood brush" sounds like what we call reed rush, a thin, tubular plant that grows in sections and is found wild here in the US. Good Clarineting "over there."

Silicon carbide abrasive paper is the best for me. Silicon carbide is almost as hard as diamond. I also use a Vitry hollow ground knife as necessary. Good Luck!

I've attempted to start using the Cordier reed trimmer I got for Christmas. My teacher showed me how to use it, I just need some practice. Unfortunately, my reeds are usually too hard, not too soft.
